Intention

Basics of islam Intention

The Haq path starts with the heart; the heart is the decision centre. The absolute decision of the heart is called intention. Intension comes before any action or deed; intention is superior to any deed. Intention is sincerity and sincerity is the key of all the deeds. Allah looks to the heart and intention in the heart, in all our deeds. Who has a good intention takes a good result, who has a bad intension strays from the road. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wasallam) said about this subject:

Narrated Abû Hurairah (Radhiy Allahu Anhu): Allah’s Messenger said, “Allah looks not at your figures, nor at your outward appearance but He looks at your hearts and deeds.”(Muslim)

“A mumin’s intention is superior to his deeds, when a Mumin performs a deed for Allah a Noor (divine light) spreads in his heart.” (Bayhaqi)

All the Arifs (saints) gave and gives lots of thought to this subject. Basically they said that progression or regression on the discipline path is dependent on the intention.

The great saint Junaid-i-Baghdadi (Radhiy Allahu Anh) draws attention to this important subject.

Most of the things that obstruct the Mumin’s spiritual advance and deter his path are caused because his deeds are performed with depraved intention and attitude.

If a person makes when he is leaving home for work and says; “Ya Allah, you are the Razzaq, you are the giver of the daily food, however you ordered us to work for food and we obey your and Prophet’s order by going to earn and look for food.” By saying this, he will earn for the time he spends on his work. To earn these good deeds, good intention is enough.

If a Mumin intends to do a bad thing but he thinks before doing it and decides not to do it, he earns the equivalent to one good deed because of his behaviour. If he commits a sin, he earns one sin. If the person repents sincerely for his sins, all of his sins are forgiven. All these are the miracle and virtue of the Iman.

Narrated ‘Abdullâh bin ‘Abbâs (Radhiy Allahu Anhu): Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wasallam) said that Allah the Glorious said, “Verily, Allah has ordered that the good and the bad deeds be written down. Then He explained it clearly how (to write): He who intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, then Allah records it for him as a full good deed, but if he carries out his intention, the Glorious and the Great Allah writes it down for him with Him as from ten to seven hundred times, and even many times more. But if he intends to do an evil act and has not done it, then Allah writes it down with Him as a full good deed, but if he intends it and has done it, Allah writes it down as one bad deed. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Any training system, which is not targeting Allah’s pleasure, can neither take the person to Allah nor to the endless happiness.

The teaching of Islam and training of Arifs and Awliya is to reach the human to Ikhlas and the stage of pleasure, Ikhlas means to do everything for the pleasure of Allah, as he ordered. And this can be best understood by spending time with your Sheikh.

Sultan-ul-Arifeen, Sakhi Shaykh Sultan Bahu (Rahmatullahi Alay) says: (English Translation)

You have been counting your rosary beads, But your heart hasn’t taken a turn for the better. What can anyone gain from such a practice?

You acquired knowledge by reading scriptures, But you didn’t submit yourself to their mandate, What can anyone gain from such knowledge?

You secluded yourself for forty-day retreats, But that too did you no good.

You may keep boiling milk forever, O Bahu, But unless it is cultured, it will not yield the essence.
